How Documentaries Tell the Truth: How What We Watch Shapes Our Opinions

Documentaries are one of the most powerful ways to understand the world and gain different perspectives. They provide information to viewers by addressing real events, scientific discoveries, historical processes or social issues. However, documentaries are not only productions that convey information, they are also powerful tools that shape our perceptions, the way we think and the way we look at the world.

When watching a documentary, we don’t just learn the information presented; how that information is told, which aspects are highlighted, and from which perspective it is presented also affect our thinking. For example, crime documentaries can reveal the workings of the justice system and sometimes trigger discussions on the presumption of innocence or the fairness of judicial processes. Technology documentaries can shape our predictions about the future by shedding light on topics such as artificial intelligence, big data, or space exploration. Art and culture documentaries can provide a deeper understanding of our cultural heritage by addressing the birth of an art movement or the creative process of a certain period.

History documentaries show that the past is not just a series of events, but also a guide to understanding the present. Seeing how an event is interpreted in different narratives proves that history is not fixed but a constantly re-evaluated and explored area. Similarly, political documentaries reveal how current social structures came to be, how economic systems function, and the roles of individuals in decision-making mechanisms.

Watching documentaries is not only about gaining information, but also encourages viewers to discuss and think. Chatting with others about a documentary allows us to explore different perspectives and helps us question what we see. Seeing how different people draw different conclusions from the same documentary is an important experience in understanding how our thoughts are shaped. Discussions, especially among documentary viewers, go beyond a one-way flow of information and foster critical thinking.

Today, with the increase in digital platforms, documentaries have become easier to access. However, it is also important to be selective within this diversity. Instead of believing every narrative without questioning its source and impartiality, watching by considering multiple perspectives helps us gain a more conscious perspective.

Documentaries not only provide information to their viewers, but also give them the power to question the world. After watching them, thinking about them for a while, discussing them and obtaining supporting information from different sources allows the content to be better understood and leave a lasting impression. Therefore, documentaries should not only be viewed as productions, but also as windows that encourage thinking and talking.
